I disagree that Lelouch died, but i think it was a mystery that the was planned to let us figure it out. The Code is the power of immortality, which C.C. has. The 98th Emperor of Britannia, Charles, has the Code. He transferred the Code to Lelouch while strangling him in episode 21.
The code dose not activate unless the owner of the code dies. Charles's Code got activated when he shot his self not when VV died, the death of was simply due to the battle wounds not due the loss of her code. When the code is activated it gets the person memories back to him and the person who touch the code user sees the memories too. That happens in the end when Nunnally saw Lelouch's memories as well as how Lelouch saw C.C memories in Narita. Which shows that Lelouch got the code.
Because Lelouch did not get the code from C.C and C.C is still alive he remained having his Geass since the origin of the geass is from VV. Having the Code (which he obtained from Charles ) and the geass gave Lelouch the CODE GEASS.
In the end, Lelouch is the masked cart driver (why else would they mask him) and CC is seen talking to him. Which shows that even a leader sometimes need to lower their living standards and work like normal people, which is why they show the nobles working as common people 2 eps before the ending.
Well this is what i think the truth behind the ending . However everyone has his own choice of believing the true meaning of the ending behind but i liked to share my ideas with you please comments and let me know what you think
